A growing engineering business can buy a subscription for every problem and still end up with no single operating picture. RCDEN is assembling a modular internal stack around Frappe and open-source foundations, then owning the interfaces that make the parts behave like one system.

The real problem is fragmentation

Buying a separate subscription for every process can leave a small engineering company with fragmented records, duplicated permissions and no coherent operational picture. Our alternative is a modular internal infrastructure in which focused tools exchange controlled records and share clear ownership.

Frappe provides an adaptable application foundation for internal workflows, records and permissions. RCDEN’s work is in the integration: deciding which information belongs where, how changes are authorised, and how an operational event can lead to evidence without creating an uncontrolled shadow system.

The licence is part of the architecture

“Open source” does not mean ownerless or obligation-free. Licence terms vary, and compliance has to be designed into the way software is selected, modified and distributed. RCDEN treats dependency inventory, licence review, attribution and preservation of required notices as part of the engineering work.

That approach protects both the upstream communities whose work makes rapid development possible and the company that relies on it. It also encourages a better technical decision: choose a component because its architecture, maintenance and licence fit the use case—not simply because it has no purchase price.

Move quickly by reusing capable foundations. Keep control by understanding the code, the interfaces, the data and the licence.

Low cost still needs an owner

Internal ownership lets RCDEN add capability at the pace the business requires while keeping recurring cost proportionate. The trade-off is responsibility: patching, testing, access control, backup and documentation still need named owners.

These integrations are evolving internal infrastructure, not a customer release. Their purpose is to help a growing company retain the speed of a small team while strengthening the evidence and repeatability expected of a UK defence supplier.
